WONDER WALL HEADER (6)

HERE WE ARE is a heartfelt and thought-provoking book from Oliver Jeffers (b.1977), famous artist who made his writing book debut with The Day the Crayons Quit. HERE WE ARE is dedicated to his son, Harland and was written in the first two months of Harland’s life. It was inspired by Oliver’s desire to make sense of the world for his son, but it is also a gift to all children at this time, helping them to make sense of the world and their role in it.

In the European Catholic countries, Father’s Day has been celebrated on 19 March as Saint Joseph's Day since the Middle Ages. In America, Father’s Day was first celebrated after the worst mining accident in U.S. history. However, it did not become a national holiday until 1910, in the state of Washington when Sonora Smart Dodd celebrated in the Spokane YMCA on June 19th. Her story began as she sat listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Mrs. Dodd thought that it might be nice to honour fathers as well. Her father, Civil War veteran William Smart, had raised his SIX children alone, on his farm in Washington after his wife died giving birth.

This year, Father’s Day is celebrated this Sunday, June 20th . This happens to be the same day as the summer solstice (June 20 at 11:32 P.M. Eastern Time), which makes it the perfect time to kick-off the summer season with a father-focused barbecue, camping trip, beach day, or other outdoor activity!

Belgian portrait photographer, Bart Heynen, who recently moved with his family to New York City, created a photography book entitled ‘DADS’: it showcases images and quotes of a very diverse group of dads who have one thing in common; they are gay and they have children.Ever since 2015, when same-sex marriage became legal in across the U.S., we’ve witnessed a baby boom in the gay community. From New York City to Utah all these fathers are at the very beginning of a new era for gay men. Through adoption or the help of surrogates and egg donors they are able to make their dream come true and start a family of their own.’ You can have a look at a few of Heynen’s portraits under his website section labelled ‘Dads

We hope you have a great one, celebrating fathers, grandfathers, father figures!
